I’m not sure why my parents, who had me when they were in their late forties and fifties, thought that I should have been given a rocking horse. But it was the early 1980s, the economy was bad, and I had no siblings so they probably thought they could afford to give me something nice. And while they didn’t know what else to get me, they figured that a rocking horse would be appropriate. I guess they were right…
The first thing you notice about a rocking horse is its size. It’s huge – at least 3 meters (10 feet) long – with a very large base. Sitting on top of this massive platform is an even larger, wooden rocking chair. This rocking chair has two wheels, which are made of metal and sit at opposite ends of the seat, making them easier to turn than if there were one wheel at each end. If your child falls asleep sitting in this chair, then he or she will be rocked gently back and forth as you rock the entire structure from side to side. The chair can also be used by the child sitting on the ground, making it great for playtime outdoors.
The rocking horse toy is usually fitted with a harness, consisting of a wide belt around the waist with a buckle at the front and another smaller buckle at the bottom. In addition, a piece of rope runs through the buckle at the bottom of the harness and connects to rings on either side of the rocking chair. When the child sits down in the chair, the straps are fastened together, ensuring that he or she cannot fall out. There’s no need to worry about putting the child into this harness because it fits easily over his or her body. The only problem may be getting him or her out again.

Now that we’ve got the basics out of the way, let’s talk about how a rocking horse works. The mechanism that makes it move is located inside the rocking chair. On the underside of the seat is a lever. As you rock the chair back and forth, this lever moves up and down, causing the seat to rock forward and back. A second lever, attached to the same shaft, turns the two front wheels. These wheels spin freely, allowing the entire rocking chair to rock smoothly.
There are many other toys that allow children to ride and steer a vehicle, but there’s nothing like riding on a rocking horse. You can imagine what it would feel like to have someone hold you securely in the seat, while you’re being rocked back and forth. If you close your eyes and think about it, you’ll almost feel the gentle motion. Of course, this isn’t really possible, even though the toy is extremely realistic.
When your child rides the rocking horse, it’s important to keep him safe. For starters, you must make sure that the harness keeps him secured. I mentioned earlier that the harness goes all the way around the child’s waist. At the front, there is a small buckle that holds the straps together while the child is sitting on the rocking chair. However, once he starts moving, these straps become loose. To prevent your child falling out of the harness, you must tighten them every time they get off the chair. Once they are secure, you can start rocking the chair.
While the harness is keeping your child safe, it’s also providing him or her with a sense of security. Riding a rocking horse is a lot more than just sitting in the chair. Your child needs to learn balance and coordination before he or she can safely use a rocking chair. Your child will begin learning how to walk when the rocking chair is placed next to a wall, where he or she can stand up without falling.
As far as safety goes, the rocking horse toy is designed to be ridden by adults only. That means that you shouldn’t place your baby onto a rocking horse unless you’re experienced enough to do so safely. Even then, you have to check the harness regularly to ensure that it doesn’t come undone. While you may be able to steer the rocking chair, the rider is the one in control. Therefore, your child should never try to steer the rocking chair by himself or herself.
If you’ve decided that your child needs a rocking horse, then you’ve already found the perfect gift. Not only does the rocking horse provide hours of fun, it teaches kids important lessons about balance, coordination, and safety. When you look at it, the rocking horse looks like a giant toy. Yet, it’s actually much safer and better for your child than any other toy.
